Hands Across Our Land

August 18, 2015

Join us as we take a stand to protect our land and communities from the unnecessary and unwanted onslaught of new natural gas infrastructure. We are citizens, small business owners, and farmers from every walk of life standing up for our heritage and culture in rural West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina.  This is a multi-state and multi-community meet-up to unite and stand in our goal to stop the destruction of our forests by energy companies who seek to profit.

The Hands Across Our Land activities in Augusta, Nelson, and Buckingham are timed so that participants can move from west to east and be at each action:

Hands Across Our Land – Augusta
3:00 p.m. Braley Pond, photos on the field north of Braley Pond
For directions to Braley Pond, click here.  The group will meet at Braley Pond and photos will be at the field north of Braley Pond, which belongs to landowners on the route who oppose the pipeline.  Note change from the originally scheduled photo venue, which was at 3:30 at the GW National Forest sign on 250.  Contact Deirdre Skogen (deirdre.skogen@gmail.com) or Ernie Reed (lec@wildvirginia.org) for more information.  Coordinator:  Misty Boos

Hands Across Our Land – Nelson/Augusta
Gather
at the top of Afton Mountain at 5:15 p.m., on the rock bridge which connects the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive at Rt. 250 on Afton Mountain, with photos at 5:30 p.m. This bridge has great history and certainly holds a special place in the hearts of Augusta/Nelson residents. It sits on the county line and has lots of available parking with an easy walk to the bridge.  Coordinators are Marilyn Shifflett (Free Nelson) and Jennifer Lewis (Friends of Augusta). Contact freenelson3@gmail.com for additional information.

Hands Across Our Land – Nelson/Buckingham
Gather on the James River Bridge, Rt. 56, Wingina, 6:30 p.m.
It will be held at the bridge across the James River on Route 56 at 6:30 p.m., with photos at 6:45 p.m. Nelson’s Matt Dwyer and Buckingham’s Chad Oba are coordinating the event.  Contact freenelson3@gmail.com for additional information.    Also in Buckingham:  an interfaith prayer for the environment at LOTUS (Yogaville temple)  at 11:45 a.m., and 5 p.m. photo op at Union Hill Baptist Church, Rt. 663, Hands Around Our Church, circling the church in symbolic protection from the compressor station.

Hands Across Our Land – Charlottesville
4:30 p.m. at the Free Speech Wall on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.

Richmond:  12 noon, 8th and E. Cary St., downtown Richmond.  Wear blue!  Opportunity for Richmond to stand with the Counties and tell the Governor: “No New Pipelines”!! Marking ONE YEAR OF RESISTANCE!  We will take a series of photos at 2 locations – The first will be at Dominion Headquarters @ 8th and Cary. Then we will walk about 7 blocks up to the Broad Street entrance of the Patrick Henry Building, where the Governor’s office is located. We’ll tell the Governor: Stand with Virginians, not Dominion! Call if off!   Note about accessibility: this is about .4 mile walk, and some of it is up hill.  See further Richmond information on their Facebook page.
